TAMPA, Fla. - The TCU volleyball team (6-15, 2-8 C-USA) fell to the University of South Florida Bulls (14-7, 7-3 C-USA) in a tough three-game match on Friday night. Senior Marci King fell one dig short of her 52nd career double-double (12 kills, 9 digs). The Frogs have now dropped three straight, and look to break the skid against UAB on Sunday afternoon in Birmingham, Ala.
The Frogs fell behind early in game one as the Bulls got out to a 5-1 lead. TCU rallied to tie the match at 14 all on a kill by junior Jenn Cuca, before USF made a run. The Frogs stayed within two or three points for most of the game before USF pulled away to win 30-26.
The second game was similar to the first as TCU kept things close early before USF extended their lead midway to 17-12. The Frogs got back in the game as they tied the game at 19-19 on an Allison Lynch kill. TCU continued to keep things close until the Bulls made another run, scoring eight of the last twelve points to win the game 30-26. The Frogs had a scare at the 24-22 mark when freshman outside hitter Dominika Szabo went down while going after a ball.
Following intermission, TCU took the early 3-1 lead until USF got back in the game and extended their lead to as many as four. The Frogs made their own run as they scored six straight points on kills from Cuca and King. USF stretched things out again to as many as six, before the Frogs pulled within two several times late. The Bulls were too much, though, and took the third game 30-26 to take the match 3-0.
"I was disappointed we couldn't get the win tonight," said head coach Sandy Troudt. "We lost each game by only four points even though they out-hit us (38 to 56 kills). Michelle Collier played really well for them. It was nice to have Shannon Brown playing again for us."
King led the Frogs in kills with 12, while Cuca led the squad with 31 attacks. Sophomore Tori Barlow passed out 15 assists and Lynch had three blocks. King, Cuca and Lynch each had nine digs for the night. Szabo, Cuca and Barlow each had one ace.
The Frogs stay on the road as they travel to UAB to take on the Blazers on October 28. TCU plays again in the metroplex on Tuesday, October 30 at Texas-Arlington.
