FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU volleyball team (6-12, 2-5 C-USA) won its first three-game match of the season over the Bearkats of Sam Houston State (8-12, 5-6 SLC) on Thursday in the Rickel Center at TCU. In addition, TCU picked up its third win in the month of October, a school-record for the squad.
The Frogs ripped out to a 10-1 lead in game one behind the serving of junior Jenn Cuca. Freshman Elizabeth Bateman entered her first collegiate game to serve the last three points of game one, and the Frogs took it home 30-13. The 13 opponent points allowed by TCU in a 30-point game are the fewest of the season.
The Bearkats came to play in game two as they broke out to an early lead before the Frogs tied things up, then took the lead for good. The Frogs had strong play from seniors Marci King, Lindsay Hayes and Allison Lynch during the second game. TCU went to intermission with a 2-0 lead after picking up game two 30-22.
Game three looked nothing like the first two games as the teams traded points for much of it, until the Frogs took the lead at 21-20 and never looked back. TCU was able to capitalize on errors by SHSU and take the game 30-23. This was the first three-game match that the Frogs have won in the 2001 season.
"I was so pleased with how we came out in game one," said head coach Sandy Troudt. "We played hard, and it was a real team effort. This was our first sweep of the season. We had a very balanced offense tonight, and some tough serving. Elizabeth (Bateman) came in to a tough situation (in game one) and served well."
TCU was led in kills by Lynch and freshman Dominika Szabo with 11 apiece. King, Lynch and Szabo each recorded 20 attacks on the night, while King also led in digs with nine. Lynch topped the team in blocks with six for the evening, while Hayes had 25 assists. Four Frogs (Szabo, Lynch, Cuca and freshman Amber Sims) each posted an ace for the squad.
The Frogs finish their seven-match homestand with conference foes Charlotte and East Carolina on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both matches are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Rickel Center.
