FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU volleyball team (5-12, 2-5 C-USA) fell to conference foe Houston (8-8, 5-2 C-USA) in three games on Saturday at the Rickel Center. TCU's homestand will continue next week at the Rickel against Sam Houston State, Charlotte and East Carolina.
Houston came out with an early lead and the Frogs played catch-up throughout game one, pulling to within one point several times. However, UH's strong serving series from senior Jennifer Wittenburg proved to be too much for the Frogs as the Cougars took the first game 30-22.
Game two looked like it was going to be the Frogs' game as they broke out to an early lead. UH came back strong, though, and tied the match at 18, then went ahead for the duration to win the game 30-26. The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in to intermission.
The third game resembled the first with Houston jumping out to an early lead. However this time, the Cougars never let the Frogs back into the game, winning 30-21.
"We should've had the second game," said head coach Sandy Troudt. "We didn't take advantage of Houston's cold streak to put it away."
"Game one was a barn-burner, though (hitting percentages of .393 for TCU and .381 for UH). The difference was that they had 22 kills and we had 14. We just didn't put the ball away."
TCU was led by senior Marci King with eight kills, 22 attacks and nine digs for the evening. Sophomore Tori Barlow passed out 16 assists, while senior Allison Lynch had two aces and senior Jennifer Sebastian led the Frogs with four blocks.
The Frogs finish their homestand with three matches next week. Opponents include non-conference Sam Houston State (October 17) and conference foes Charlotte (October 19) and East Carolina (October 20). All matches are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Rickel Center.
