AUSTIN (Apr. 6) - TCU senior Adrian Martinez highlighted a light day of action for the TCU track and field team by taking second place in the men's 10,000 meters at the 74th Texas Relays Thursday afternoon at Mike Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus.
Running on a windy day in which the wind gusts reach almost 30 miles per hour from the south, Martinez put together a steady performance in difficult conditions for distance running. Martinez spent much of the race near the back of the lead pack as he was sixth with five laps remaining in the 25-lap event. Then, with just over two laps remaining, Martinez made a move to the front of a pack that never threatened Mike Njenga, who won the race with a time of 29 minutes, 40.06 seconds. Martinez finished in 32:12.08 in his first 10k performance of the outdoor season.
Earlier on Thursday, two other TCU athletes competed in preliminaries in their respective events.
Freshman Carla Poole placed fifth in her qualifying heat of the women's 400-meter hurdles in a time of 63.51 seconds, failing to advance to the finals. In the men's 400-meter hurdles, senior Mark Hill was sixth in his qualifying heat with a time of 55.81. A busy day awaits TCU athletes on Friday as Horned Frogs are slated to compete in seven individual events and the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays. Action begins with a qualifying heat of the Clyde Littlefield men's 4x100 at 9:30 a.m. followed by a qualifying heat of the University women's 4x100 at 9:40.
