PHILADELPHIA (April 27) - Sophomore Katie Singleton smashed the TCU record in the women's 5,000 meters Thursday evening to highlight action by the Horned Frogs at the 106th Penn Relays at Franklin Field.
Singleton crushed the old school record by almost 25 seconds on the way to a 13th place finish among an outstanding field. Singleton's time of 16:52.84 was well ahead of the old TCU record of 17:17.1 by Kim Baker set in 1990. Maria Elena Calle of Virginia Commonwealth won the race in 16:06.03, outkicking Villanova's Ann McGranahan who finished in 16:08.94. TCU sophomore Robin Schacht placed 17th in 17:17.1, an outdoor personal best.
"I wanted to run fast and Penn is the place to do it," Singleton said. "I thought I might (set a school record) if things came together and they did. The weather was cold, but it was cold for everybody. Really, without any wind, it was pretty comfortable."
Just moments earlier, TCU got another strong distance performance from Glady's Keitany in the women's 3,000 meters. Keitany placed third in the race in a time of 9:42.35 behind Virginia's Sarah Folse, who ran 9:36.01, and Georgetown's Lorena Adams (9:40.51).
The day started with the women's 4x100-meter relay preliminaries with the TCU quartet of Chaunte Baldwin, Tiffany Starts, Chanel Hewitt and Dywana Crudup posting the 12th-fastest time of the qualifiers. While the team failed to reach the Championship final, TCU will compete in the consolation round on Saturday. TCU's time of 46.24 was second in its heat behind South Carolina's 45.33. Texas is the fastest qualifier to the Championships final at 45.25.
Action continued with the 4x400-meter relay as the TCU quartet of Chanel Hewitt, Janice Thomas, Sabrina Edge, Dywana Crudup placed eighth in 3:46.96. Pittsburgh won the heat in 3:37.09. TCU, which failed to qualify for the Championships final, will compete Saturday's College consolation final.
