LAWRENCE, Kan. - After losing game one, TCU rebounded to win three of the final four games with Kansas to defeat the Jayhawks, 3-2 (5-15, 15-13, 9-15, 15-9, 15-5), at the Jayhawk Classic in front of 702 screaming Jayhawk fans at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center. With the win, TCU improves to 2-6 on the season. Kansas drops to 5-1. Senior outside hitter Jill Pape (San Antonio, Texas/East Central HS) led the way for TCU with 21 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Allison Lynch (Lincoln, Neb./Malcolm HS) had seven blocks.
"I was really excited with the way we were able to battle back and win this match," head coach Sandy Troudt said. "We had some trouble with that (on Wednesday, Sept. 8) against Baylor and (earlier in the day) against Auburn."
TCU dominated in game five. After being tied 3-3, Pape went on a serving binge aided by the blocking of Lynch, sophomore setter Lindsay Hayes (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS) and junior outside hitter Amy Atamanczuk (Fort Worth, Texas/Paschal HS) to jump to a 13-3 lead in the final game.
"There was a lot of tactile serving by Jill," Troudt added. "We also told the team that they were going to be a little more afraid to make an attack error and to be more aggressive on the block and they were able to do that.
The Frogs came out more aggressive in the beginning of game four. TCU jumped to a 4-2 lead but this time was able to hold on to secure the game, 15-9 and force the decisive game. Game three belonged to TCU in the initial points, but Kansas retaliated from an early 6-1 deficit to steal the game. KU outscored TCU 14-3 to win that game.
The second game was all KU early. The Jayhawks ran out to a 13-9 lead, but TCU rallied back and claimed the final six points of the game to even the match. Two kills by Pape, one by freshman middle blocker Katie Kieffer (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Acad.) and three Jayhawk attack errors closed out the scoring for TCU in the second frame. In all, Pape landed seven kills in that game.
The Frogs struggled from the outset in game one. The Jayhawks beat TCU 15-5 in that first game. Amy Myatt led the Hawks with six kills in that first game. Kansas hit .500 in game one.
TCU concludes its weekend tourney action against Chicago State Saturday at noon.
