Frogs Earn Third Place at NCAA Sectional Meet

FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 21) - In the NCAA Sectional meet, TCU hosted rifle squads from Texas A&M, Centenary and Mo.-Kansas City. TCU's first team - TCU Purple - earned a third-place combined finish. Texas A&M won the meet, which serves as the qualification for next month's NCAA Championships.
TCU performed well in the air rifle portion, finishing second in the event to Mo.-Kansas City. The Kangaroos scored 1,411 points to TCU's 1,375. Texas A&M finished one point behind TCU Purple. Texas A&M's Timothy Mitchell won the event, shooting a 374. Dena Putnam (Perry, Kan./Perry LeCompton HS) was TCU's top finisher in fourth with 364 points.
In the smallbore, Texas A&M's first place effort helped it have the top aggregate score. The Aggies scored 4,283. Mo.-Kansas City was second at 4,215; TCU Purple was third with 4,002. Mitchell also claimed top honor in the smallbore with a 1,139 score. Putnam was again TCU's highest finisher, this time with a third-place finish.
This event was a part of a series of sectional events across the country. Scores from each sectional will be compared to others competing in similar events. The top 10 team scores each in air rifle and smallbore qualify for the NCAA Championships held March 9-11 in Lexington, Va. Additionally, the top 10 individual scores will qualify.
